Reflexology is a natural therapy believed to have originated in China and Egypt over 5,000 years ago. It is a non-invasive treatment that stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms and so helps promote health and well-being. It is frequently used in conjunction with conventional medicine to aid recovery from disease or illness. It can also function as a maintenance programme for a healthy body.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy. The word ‘holistic’ (noun: holism) relates to or is concerned with the treatment of whole systems (e.g. the entire body) rather than the treatment or dissection/analysis of it’s parts. As such it is interactive and takes into consideration the emotional, mental, social and spiritual needs and wellbeing of the individual.

Reflexology is based on the belief that there are reflex areas (or pressure points) on the feet and hands which correspond to specific organs and systems within the body as a whole. The Reflexologist will use hand and finger techniques to apply precise pressure to these reflex areas or pressure points. These techniques can affect the organs and internal systems of the body in a positive way and so restore normal functioning and promote health.

It is vital that we as individuals take as much responsibility as possible for our own health. Reflexology can help us to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.

Our feet connect us to the earth. They ‘root’ us in our world and so it is vital that we properly care for them in order to keep this foundation strong and stable. Our feet and toes are essential elements in body movement. Our toes (most especially the big toe) help us balance and move with solidity and maintain equilibrium. The body lines up over the feet; if a foot goes out of alignment then the ankle, knee, pelvis and back follow suit. Therefore, perfect alignment is an integral part of physical health.
